Job Description:
Auto Machine Specialties is seeking an Engine Machinist / Machine Shop Technician to join our team. This position is open to both entry-level applicants who want to learn the trade and experienced machinists who can produce consistent, high-quality work in a fast-paced engine machine shop.
You will assist with and perform precision machining and reconditioning processes on engine components including cylinder heads, blocks, crankshafts, connecting rods, and related parts. Success in this role requires reliability, attention to detail, strong work ethic, and a commitment to quality.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with and/or perform engine machining operations (based on skill level), such as cleaning/inspection, boring/honing support, surfacing, and cylinder head processes.
- Use precision measuring tools (micrometers, dial bore gauges, indicators, calipers) to verify dimensions and document measurements as required.
- Clean, inspect, and identify defects such as cracks, wear, warpage, or damage; communicate findings to the shop lead/management.
- Follow job travelers/work orders and shop procedures to ensure consistent quality and repeatable results.
- Maintain a clean, organized workstation and work safely at all times.
- Support parts handling, staging, and workflow organization to keep jobs moving efficiently.
- Work collaboratively with the team to meet production goals without sacrificing quality.
Qualifications:
Entry-Level Applicants:
- Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn.
- Basic math skills and ability to follow instructions and documented processes.
- Interest in machining, engines, and precision work.
- Reliable attendance, good attitude, and coachability.
- Any related schooling, shop class, or hands-on mechanical experience is a plus (not required).
Experienced Applicants:
- Prior experience in an engine machine shop or machining environment.
- Confidence using precision measurement tools and holding tolerances consistently.
- Familiarity with engine components and common machining/reconditioning processes (cylinder heads, blocks, cranks, rods).
- Ability to diagnose machining-related issues, work efficiently, and maintain quality control.
Preferred (Not Required):
- Experience with cylinder head work (inspection/testing, valve/seat-related processes, surfacing requirements).
- Experience operating engine machining equipment (boring bar, hone, surfacer, seat and guide equipment, etc.).
- Forklift experience.
- Welding/fabrication experience.
